As a follower her main location during gameplay depends on which faction you ally yourself with if siding with the dawnguard she can be found at fort dawnguard. Meaning if you do quest from say the companions where you help one of them do a quest serana will follow you anyway and fight with you. Serana will still be available as a follower.

If siding with the volkihar vampires she can be found at volkihar keep. Lydia a typical follower various npcs and creatures can follow you while you re playing the game and be your ally. Yes you get serana as a follower either way. Did you all know that if you havnt taken her back to her father she will never not follow you.

No plot spoilers please i just finished the second quest of the dawnguard dlc and currently have serana as a follower but i heard you have to eventually decide on joining either vampires or staying with the dawnguard.
