In an attempt to decrease that pressure the molecules begin to move outwardly that results in an expansion or wound in the wood.

The flashing and the guttering are actually the weakest points of a slate roof so look at them first.
The damage from the expansion allows the wood sap to bleed or sweat out from deep within the beam.
Structural damage is inevitable if there is a serious and long standing roof leak.

Map the roof leak.
The nail will provide a path for the water.
Insert a nail in the hole where water is leaking through the roof.
Place the shingle or plywood onto the tar and spread more of the tar around the edges of your patch.
Step 2 place a bucket underneath the nail to catch the water as it runs down the nail.
Spongy and weak water damaged wood can end in peeling paint damaged ceilings and buckled wall coverings.
Use a putty knife to spread the tar into the leaking hole on the inside of your roof.
It could be the flashing so you will need to check that as well.
You also need to check the sheathing under the slates when you re fixing leaks.
Before you leave your attic use a measuring tape to roughly map out where the leak is so you can find it once the rain stops.
